Why Hunt Public Land?
I’ve been asked this question several times: “Matt, why deer hunt public land when you have several private land properties you can hunt?” Simple: It’s fun. It really is fun. It’s a challenge, a level playing field with every other hunter. As hunters, that’s what we love, right?! The challenge of the hunt? Well, if challenge is what you seek, then you need to try public land hunting.

Public Land Will Make You A Better Deer Hunter
I think my favorite part about public land deer hunting is “The Game Plan.” It’s different from private land. On my private properties I hunt extremely conservative (most of the time). I make sure everything is perfect, I study ever trail cam picture and analyze every hunt. While effective, it can be paralyzing at times and, in all honesty, boring. That’s what makes public land fun. You are almost obligated to push the limits, knowing that anyone else at any time could walk onto the property and do whatever they want. Public land forces you to HUNT. You’re not just sitting, or analyzing, or observing. You are straight up HUNTING. Because of this I truly believe hunting public land makes you a better deer hunter.

My 2018 Public Land Buck
I recently experienced an AWESOME public land hunt. In all honesty, it was one of the greatest hunting experiences I’ve had to date. I did not walk away with the world’s biggest buck, but what I did manager to do is execute a PERFECT game plan that was fun, exciting and aggressive. Here’s the entire story of my 2018 public land buck:
Give Public Land Deer Hunting A Try
Seriously, give it a try. My guess is there is some public land around you and that you’ve always wanted to head out there and give it a try. Well…DO IT. Go try it. Try something new, something aggressive, something crazy. It may very well be the best hunting experience of your life.

Be safe, have fun and best of luck in the woods!
